Ok so here it is the thing of the century how i made a inexpensive air filter for my computer.
First some background i live way up a dirt road and the neighbors speed merrily past all day long creating enough dust to sand down my teeth. My machine or more precisly my lomg series of machines needed to be taken apart and blown out at least once a week or they woul cease to function. I tried a lot of different apraoches and it turns out to be simple you have to make sure that you are pushing more air into the machine than is being removed.  At first i tried to seal the machine so that it could only get air from the filtered intake. What a pain and it did not work way too many cracks and holes in the average computer case. So the dust would race in through all of them. If you filter the air and maintain a positive air pressure inside the case all of the cracks and holes are blowing filtered air out instead of sucking things in. You need to plan the route the air will take and provide a larger fan on the intake or like i did stack three 120mm fans back to back creating quite a bit of flow..
The ingredients consist of a scotch brite pad a 30 cd spindle package. House hold goop. And a styrafoam disk i bought all of these things at the 98cent store so the cost is minimal.

It kinda looks weird but  it works really good if you have a Little ability you can make one easily. If you are tired of buying cans of air and unscrewing the side of your machine to blow dust all over the place this is for you.
You might need to buy a faster or maybe another intake fan to insure a positive pressure inside the case also wheen you cut out the styrfoam thingy for the filter cut it so that it will not fit all the way in against the holes if it touches the holes it will not filter as well as it does if it is spaced  back a little this way it exposes more of the surface area of the scotch brite pad and lessens air restrictions  i tried it right up against the holes in the first proto types and the dust will accumulate in the little holes faster and clog them up and slow the air flow after a short time. The scotch brite filter can be cleaned by either blowing it off or you can just rinse out the dust with water and then let it dry and it works all over again or you can make several so that you always have one ready to go while you clean the others.
You need some skills and common sense to do this. all computer cases are somewhat different so this idea might not work out for you the one i made is for a 120mm fan intake hole if you have a box with smaller fans you can adapt another kind of plastic container to fit. If your box has an intake hidden or in accsesable in the front you might try and reverse the fans in front to blow out and use the rear fan as an intake. Or some similar plot to achieve filtration.
An air filter is a Nice thing indeed.
